Connext recently announced an airdrop for their NEXT token, marking it as a first-of-its-kind cross-chain airdrop. This initiative allows users to claim NEXT on their preferred chain without interacting with a bridge. Whereas many airdrops typically involve gas fees for claiming tokens, Connext’s collaboration with Gelato Relay allows users to claim tokens without paying any gas fees. This is enabled by Gelato Relay's ability to relay users' transactions on-chain, ensuring secure gasless transactions for an ultra-smooth UX.

Connext has partnered up with Gelato Relay to simplify token claiming across chains, eliminating the concern of gas fees. At the heart of this collaboration is Gelato's 1Balance, a unified multi-chain payments system. Using 1Balance, users can deposit USDC on the Polygon network to cover relay costs on any chain. For instance, if a user requests a relay call on Arbitrum, Gelato checks their 1Balance to ensure there's sufficient USDC to fund the transaction, then relays it on-chain.

This streamlined integration is made possible through the sponsoredCall SDK method. Utilizing a sponsor API key for authentication, the 'sponsoredCall' method guarantees secure and gasless transactions.

Here's how it works: When a user chooses their target chain for the token claim and initiates a request with Connext, the process springs into action. Instead of sending a regular on-chain transaction and paying for gas fees in native tokens, the user's request is being forwarded by Connext to Gelato Relay using the sponsoredCall method. Once received, Gelato Relay handles the on-chain execution. The gas cost for this is seamlessly managed through the 1Balance payments system. Connext funds the 1Balance, sponsoring the transaction for users and ensuring gas fees are covered across all chains. Consequently, tokens are sent directly to users' wallets, eliminating any gas fee concerns and offering a seamless and efficient experience.

Gelato Relay has made improvements to increase its transaction throughput, catering to initiatives like Connext's airdrop.
